Voice typing for Indian languages: Hindi, Bangla, Tamil, Urdu and more

The best voice typing tool for an Indian language depends on which language you speak and which computer you use. For Hindi there are free options everywhere: Apple's dictation on a Mac, Windows 11 voice typing on a PC, and Google Docs voice typing in a browser. For Bangla, Urdu, Tamil and most other languages of the region, Apple has nothing, and Windows covers only some of them. Lipo, our Mac app, supports ten of these languages, writes the English words inside your sentence in your own script, and can translate what you say into English. This guide uses "Indian languages" the way people search for them, and it includes Bangla and Urdu, which are also the main languages of Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Which tools support which language?

This table shows what each company publishes about its own tool, as of October 2026.

Wispr Flow is left out of the table because it names only one of these ten languages: Hindi, which is in its tuned top group. Willow Voice says it supports more than 100 languages and has pages for some of them, Bengali among them, but publishes no full list. superwhisper depends on the speech model you choose.

A "Yes" in this table means the language is on the list. It does not tell you how well the tool handles your accent, your names, or the English words in your sentences. The last section of this guide shows how to check that yourself in ten minutes.

Hindi: free options exist, so compare them on Hinglish

Hindi is the one language of the region with free voice typing on every computer. On a Mac, turn on Apple's dictation in System Settings, under Keyboard. On a Windows PC, press the Windows key and H. In a browser, Google Docs voice typing works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Wispr Flow also puts Hindi in its top group of seven languages, the ones it calls "trained and tuned to match English-level performance".

Apple's Hindi dictation has two limits worth knowing. It does not add punctuation by itself, so you say each mark. And Hindi is not on Apple's list of languages processed on your Mac, so your speech goes to Apple's servers.

The real test for Hindi is Hinglish. "कल client के साथ meeting है" has two English words, and a tool that listens for one language at a time often writes them wrong. Wispr Flow's help centre says it detects one language per dictation, although Wispr has been testing a Hinglish voice model since early 2026, according to TechCrunch, and does not say which script that model writes. Bangla and Urdu: no built-in option on Mac or Windows

Neither Apple's dictation nor Windows voice typing supports Bangla or Urdu. That leaves three kinds of option on a computer.

Google Docs voice typing supports both, for free, inside a Google Doc. Google says punctuation might not be available in every language, and its spoken punctuation commands work only in English. So expect to add the full stops yourself, then copy the text to wherever you needed it.

Other dictation apps. Aqua Voice lists both Bengali and Urdu. Willow Voice has a page about Bengali. Wispr Flow names neither.

Lipo supports both on a Mac. It writes Bengali or Urdu script, removes filler words, adds punctuation, and pastes the finished text in any app, including WhatsApp Desktop and Gmail. The Bangla voice typing guide explains the setup and how Banglish is handled.

On a phone, Gboard supports both languages, which is why many people dictate on their phone and send the text to themselves.

Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati: Windows has them, Apple does not

Windows 11 voice typing includes all four, so a Windows user has a free built-in option. Apple's dictation includes none of them. Google Docs voice typing has Tamil, Marathi and Gujarati, but not Telugu. Aqua Voice lists Marathi and Tamil. Lipo supports all four on a Mac.

Punjabi, Kannada and Malayalam: the fewest options

These three have the least support. Apple and Windows include none of them. Google Docs voice typing has Kannada and Malayalam, but not Punjabi. Aqua Voice lists none of the three. Lipo supports all three on a Mac.

The real problem: English words inside your sentence

Almost nobody in an office speaks a full sentence without an English word in it. "Meeting", "client", "deadline" and "report" appear in Hindi, Bangla, Tamil and Urdu sentences every day. This mixing is called code-switching, and people call the results Hinglish, Banglish and Tanglish.

Most speech to text tools (the technology that turns spoken audio into written words) choose one language and write everything in it. The English word then comes out as a local word that sounds a little like it, or disappears. Lipo recognizes both languages and writes the English word in your script, so "meeting" becomes মিটিং in Bangla and मीटिंग in Hindi. Speak your language, get English

Many people in the region think in Hindi, Bangla or Tamil and write in English all day, to clients, managers and professors. Lipo can do the translation as part of the dictation. You speak Bangla, and Lipo pastes English. It works between any two of its 50+ languages, in both directions.

None of the built-in tools translate what you dictate. Among dictation apps, superwhisper translates into English only, and Wispr Flow, Willow Voice and Aqua Voice do not translate what you dictate. The guide to dictating in one language and typing in another shows examples.

Lipo has two limits to know before you try it. It runs only on Mac. And it needs an internet connection, because transcription and cleanup happen on servers, although your history and recordings stay on your Mac.

A realistic test for your language

1. Dictate a message you would really send, with English words mixed in where you naturally use them.
2. Include the names of three people you know, said the way you say them.
3. Include a word with a joined letter, such as ক্ষ, क्ष or ஸ்ரீ, and check that the script comes out right.
4. Say one sentence, then correct part of it, the way you would in speech.
5. Count the edits you need before you could send it.

Try the free option for your language first: Apple or Windows if they support it, otherwise Google Docs. Then run the same message through any app you are thinking of paying for. The tool that needs the fewest edits, with your accent and your mix of languages, is the right one for you.
